When we refer to sex toys, we think of them as a modern day invention. However, Hallie Lieberman thinks differently. She earned her Ph. D from the University of Wisconsin by proving that sex toys are much older than we think they are. In her opinion, 30,000 years ago, our ancestors were making 8-inch penises from siltstone.

Even though they’re older than most of the inventions we use today, they’re still a subject of controversy. In the early 1900s, sex toys couldn’t be sold or advertised publicly. Even today, there are certain laws in some states of the US that don’t permit the public advertisement of these toys. That might be the reason why Hitachi doesn’t openly express what their Magic Wand is meant to do.

Till 1960s, people used to cringe at the word “dildo” and till the mid 2000s, they still did. But, there were a few movies that changed the outlook of people and what they thought about sex toys. “Sex and the City” would be a great example. Their portrayal of the Rabbit Vibrators resulted in a peak in sales. Similarly, 50 Shades of Grey also introduced people to bondage toys that they previously thought inappropriate.

Sex toys are an industry that will keep getting better and better in the years to come. There are new developments being made and new products like Oral Toys are hitting the market. We’re not in the day and age of sex robots, but it’d be an understatement to say that we’re pretty damn close.
